Comment to 'Best (or just decent) Open-source Dating Software Platforms'
  • Hi Andrew, I would like to introduce you to a dating software provider that has been around since 2003 (DatingSoftware.biz). We recently bought the domain and setup under idatemedia.com and we also bought the rights to their software and we're in the process of making major changes to it. I'd love to have iDateMedia added to your list and get your thoughts. At the very least be a contributing part of your Una community. Been following you since the old dolphin days back before Boonex! :)

    • Thank you for reaching out. Well done reviving the platform. Share a bit more... are you using same code base? How do you manage ongoing support and development costs with a one-off fee license model? What’s your plan for making the new package more successful?

      • We're using the same code base but it's been completely overhauled. We updated all code to PHP 7.2 and optimized all the database tables. We don't have a free version. I think the previous owner did that but after we got the site/domain/code he dropped off the face of the world! lol. As for making it more successful we're adding new templates and more features and functions. We're foregoing the app though. Seen over the years that customers don't need the app. Will get a lot of slack for that but we feel the app adds more steps to the reg process and getting onboarded has proven faster with responsive design. As for responsive design, the previous software didn't have one. It had a mobile browser that was limited, very 2002ish. So it's been replaced with responsive design. To be honest, the previous code was so old it got hacked due to sql injection points so a lot of work has/is going into it to make it awesome. I know we have a lot of competitors out there but we're making the best product we can. It's really all anyone can really do. How's Una going?

        • Hey, sorry it took a while... (9 months... geez) to reply. Great going guys! Looks like you're doing all the right things. I do agree that mobile apps complicate things, though it may be difficult to make a case of not offering one in the market where people associate dating with apps like Tinder and Bumble, and not so much with sites like Match or POF anymore. Responsive UI solves that to a degree and perhaps is OK for niche instances, but we see that ultimately if you are going to power a medium-to-large site you'd have to provide an app. At least something that can enable push notifications for iOS - like a wrapper for your site, ReactNative or similar shell.

UNA is doing very well, thanks for asking. We're steering more and more towards Enterprise-level and custom implementations - more work on each project, but better outcomes overall. Still shying away from dating though, instead of targeting projects with unique ideas, something out-of-the-box. We find it more engaging to use UNA as a framework rather than a CMS. in that sense, we can also have more synergy with other platforms, including yours. Take care and good luck.
